Rightly Responding to God’s Revelation- Sermon Notes

“Rightly Responding to God’s Revelation”

Habakkuk 2:2-5

“2 The Lord answered me: Write down this vision; clearly inscribe it on tablets so one may easily read it. 3 For the vision is yet for the appointed time; it testifies about the end and will not lie. Though it delays, wait for it, since it will certainly come and not be late. 4 Look, his ego is inflated; he is without integrity. But the righteous one will live by his faith. 5 Moreover, wine betrays; an arrogant man is never at rest. He enlarges his appetite like Sheol, and like Death he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself; he collects all the peoples for himself” (Hab. 2:2-5, CSB).

Revelation is “when God reveals Himself to us or discloses something that applies to us personally or something happening in the world.”

1. The Importance of the Revelation: “Write” (v. 2)

“Write down this vision; clearly inscribe it on tablets so one may easily read it”
(Hab. 2:2, CSB).

2. The Certainty of the Revelation: “Wait” (v. 3)

“For the vision is yet for the appointed time; it testifies about the end and will not lie” (v. 3a).
This IS going to happen! It “will not lie” (or “prove false”).

It is going to happen at exactly the right time:
“Though it delays, wait for it, since it will certainly come and not be late” (v. 3b).

3. The Response to the Revelation (vv. 4-5)

“Look, his ego is inflated, he is without integrity. But the righteous one will live by his faith”
(Hab. 2:4, CSB).

The Wrong Response: Living by Sight

“Is this not Babylon the Great that I have built to be a royal residence by my vast power and for my majestic glory?” (Dan. 4:30, CSB)

“…until you acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over human kingdoms, and He gives them to anyone He wants” (Dan. 4:32, CSB).

22 “But you, his successor, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of the heavens; …But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in His hand and who controls the whole course of your life” (Dan. 5:22-23, CSB).

The Right Response: Living by Faith

“But the righteous one will live by his/her FAITH! (Hab. 2:4, CSB).

Quoted three times in the NT: Rom. 1:17; Gal.3:11; Heb. 10:38.

1st Question:
“OK, the Babylonians are unrighteous in God’s eyes, and are subject to judgment; how can I become righteous before God and live?”

2nd Question:
“Since I am righteous before God, by grace through faith in Christ, how should I live my life?”

The question of justification: How can I become right with God?

The question of sanctification: How can I live a life worthy of God’s calling?

Have faith in God! (See 2 Cor. 1:20; Rom. 8:29)
