9-20- Sermon Notes

“Rightly Responding to the Guidance God Gives You”

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22

“Don’t stifle the Spirit. Don’t despise prophecies but test all things. Hold on to what is good. Stay away from every kind of evil” (1 Thess. 5:19-22, CSB).

  1. Do not douse the Spirit’s fire (v. 19).

“Don’t stifle the Spirit” (CSB).

“Stop quenching the Spirit” (Greek construction).

“Do not put out the Spirit’s fire” (NIV).

  1. Do not despise the Scripture’s wisdom (v. 20).

“Don’t despise prophecies” (1 Thess. 5:20, CSB).

“And he himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ” (Eph. 4:11-12, CSB).

“Pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy. For the person who speaks in a tongue is not speaking to people but to God, since no one understands him; he speaks mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the person who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and consolation. The person who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, but the one who prophesies builds up the church” (1 Cor. 14:1-4, CSB).

“Test all things. Hold to what is good” (v. 21).

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming; even now it is already in the world” (1 John 4:1-3, CSB).

“There were indeed false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, and will bring swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved ways, and the way of truth will be maligned because of them. They will exploit you in their greed with made-up stories. Their condemnation, pronounced long ago, is not idle, and their destruction does not sleep”

(2 Peter 2:1-3, CSB).

  1. Do not dishonor the Savior’s holiness (v. 22).

“Stay away from every kind of evil” (1 Thess. 5:22, CSB).

“Do not be deceived. Bad company corrupts good morals” (1 Cor. 15:33, CSB).
