Living a Wholly Holy Life- Sermon Notes

“Living a Wholly Holy Life”

1 Thessalonians 5:23-25, CSB

The church is a community that seeks to become wholly holy.

“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. And may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will do it. Brothers and sisters pray for us also” (1 Thess. 5:23-25, CSB).

To be sanctified means to be holy or set apart from this evil world for God.
Sanctification is everything God does in us to make sure we turn out like Jesus in the end.

1. Holiness comes from the God of peace Himself (v. 23).
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely. And may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

2. Holiness encompasses the entire person: spirit, soul, and body (v. 23).

“Flee sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body. Don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, who you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So, glorify God with your body” (1 Cor. 6:18-20, CSB).

“So, I do not run like one who runs aimlessly or box like one beating the air. Instead, I discipline my body and bring it under strict control, so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified” (1 Cor. 9:26-27, CSB).

3. Holiness has a Godward focus in view of Christ’s coming (vv. 23b-24).
“May you…be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will do it.”

· Holiness means to be without blame before the Lord and others.

· Holiness is motivated by the fact that Christ is coming to reward His people and to judge the wicked.

· Holiness relies on God’s calling, faithfulness, and His strength (v. 24).
“He who calls you is faithful; He will do it.”

4. Holiness grows in a loving community where believers pray for one another (v. 25).
“Brothers and sisters, pray for us also.”
