Living in God’s Will Sermon Notes

Living in God’s Will

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company…a church…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our pasts. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is to play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so, it is with you. We are in charge of our Attitudes.”
Charles R. Swindoll
The members of Christ’s body are to have –
· A right attitude toward the leaders God puts over us (1 Thess. 5:12-13).
· A right attitude toward the believers God puts around us (1 Thess. 5:14-15).
· A right attitude toward God’s will in all situations at all times (1 Thess. 5:16-18).
It is God’s will for us to be joyful, prayerful, and thankful in all situations at all times.
“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thess. 5:16-18, CSB).
1. We need to cultivate the right inward attitude: constant joy (v. 16).
“Rejoice always” (v. 16).
2. We need to cultivate the right upward attitude: ceaseless prayer (v. 17).
“Pray constantly” (CSB); “Pray without ceasing” (NAS).

3. We need to cultivate the right outward attitude: continuous thanks (v. 18).
“Give thanks in everything” (v. 18).
“This is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (v. 18).
To live in God’s will we need to cultivate—
· The right inward attitude: constant joy.
· The right upward attitude: ceaseless prayer.
· The right outward attitude: continuous thanks.
